Basic Statistical Concepts for Quality

In the realm of quality control and operations management, a solid understanding of basic statistical concepts is fundamental. Understanding Variation

Variation is inherent in all processes. Recognizing and quantifying this variation is the first step toward controlling it. We can broadly categorize variation into two types: common cause variation and special cause variation.

Variation is the enemy of quality, and understanding its sources is key to control.

Processes naturally exhibit variation. Common cause variation is random and inherent, while special cause variation arises from specific, identifiable events.

Common cause variation, also known as inherent variation or random variation, is the natural, predictable variability present in any process. It's the result of the combined effect of many small, uncontrollable factors. Special cause variation, also known as assignable cause variation or non-random variation, is due to specific, identifiable events or factors that are outside the normal operating conditions of the process. Identifying and eliminating special causes is a primary goal in quality improvement.

A normal distribution, often called a bell curve, is a symmetrical probability distribution where most values cluster around the central peak. The mean, median, and mode are all equal in a perfect normal distribution. The spread of the data is determined by the standard deviation. Approximately 68% of data falls within one standard deviation of the mean, 95% within two, and 99.7% within three standard deviations (the empirical rule).
