These questions often use phrases like 'The author implies...', 'It can be inferred from the passage...', 'The passage suggests...', or 'What is the main purpose of the author in mentioning X?'
A common pitfall with inferential questions is choosing an answer that is plausible but not directly supported by the passage, or an answer that goes too far beyond what the text allows.
Strategies for inferential questions:
- Understand the Main Idea: Grasp the overall message and purpose of the passage.
- Analyze Supporting Details: Understand how the details contribute to the main idea.
- Identify Author's Tone and Purpose: What is the author trying to convey, and how do they feel about the subject?
- Look for Connections: Connect ideas from different sentences or paragraphs.
- Evaluate Answer Choices Critically: Does the choice logically follow from the passage? Is it too broad, too narrow, or unsupported?
